Life sentence

When people die,
We lose their words of now and of tomorrow.
Ongoing conversations, jokes and anecdotes
give way to past tense narratives, and closure.
At funerals we give the full exposure to our grief
and say goodbye to one whose life is done.
But he’s my son. I can’t say “was” because
his life will not be over
while this mother’s love lives on.
